What is Legal Transcription?

So many different types of companies use transcription services and the reason behind getting these services is not the same in every industry, so the services that are being provided under the name of transcription services are also different, the transcription services taken by a pharma company are different to what lawyers would require, work in legal transcription services is complex and requires trained individuals as the use of the transcripts isn’t casual, there is complex technical and legal language involved and transcriptionist should be able to understand that fully in order to turn it into text, legal transcripts are basically taking an audio recording of a legal proceeding or a legal event and turning it into an understandable and referenceable text document.

It is important to be able to differentiate between court reporters and transcriptionist, while many people seem to confuse the two but there is some daylight between the two, a court reporter would write down spoken words as it happens but a legal transcriptionist would work with audio recordings of past legal proceedings and events, these are different tasks and require personnel with different set of skills and if you are starting your work as a transcriptionist then be absolutely clear about it and learn the skills that are relevant to this type of work.

You need verbal comprehension and good listening skills, along with that handling of a few software skills would go a long way when you are working as a legal transcriptionist, stenography equipment and software handling is a must for court reporters and they are paid very well if they are good at it, while legal transcription isn’t as complex and skilled work it still pays you a decent amount but the question is how useful you can be for the other party.
